Eastlink Delivers - high speed broadband in Rural Lunenberg County

I know I have been critical of Eastlink in the past, but I am very happy to announce that I have finally gotten high speed wireless internet way out on highway 14 in rural Nova Scotia!

The service was initially promised to be delivered last December, but better late than never. Installation went very smoothly and the technicians were courteous, polite and professional.

Stats: On satellight high speed with XPlornet I was acheiving download speeds of up to 1-2Mb/sec and upload speeds of around .1 or .05 Mb/sec for a monthly fee of $49. BUT and this is a big BUT...there were severe bandwidth limitations meaning I could usually download 1 5 minute youtube video every two hours. On top of that, there was lag due to the signal having to travel 30,000Km and back from the satellite, and given that slow pokey speed of light, each packet of data would be delayed about 600ms, making it impossible to do VOIP or use Second Life. It also seemed the slightest bit of weather either here in my area OR in Toronto where the base station is would adversely affect the signal.

Now, with the highspeed wireless ground based system at the same price of $49 a month, my internet signals only have to travel a mere 5KM to the nearest wired node, which is a mere jaunt for the light and my lag is coming in at a much more reasonable 50-60 ms. I no longer have bandwidth limits (AKA fair access policy or FAP...no pun intended) and my download speed is 3Mb/s and upload is .9Mb/sec which is identical to my hardwired internet access speed in town. It is also unaffected by rain and weather, and due to the nature of the technology, actually a bit more reliable than a wired service in a severe storm because there are no poles to fall down along the local route.

Thank you Eastlink, for persevering in spite of whiny potential customers like myself, and I look forward to a long, happy internet relationship with you.

I strongly encourage anyone and everyone in rural Lunenberg county to take advantage of this new service, and my congratulations to Eastlink and the Nova Scotia provincial government (both the PC's who started it and the NDP who are getting it finished) for making this happen!

Eastlink is the best! Yay!
